Vegephobia is the new homophobia

One of my best ex-pat friends convinced his Basque boyfriend to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle late last year.  It coincided with Christmas and as the night of December 24th loomed, Diego started to worry.  How would he tell his Aunt Yolanda that this year there would be no Serrano ham, king prawns or suckling pig for him?  How would his mother react when he told her that he wouldn't be trying any of her tuna croquettes?  And more disturbingly, what would his friends say when he turned down the de riguer "pinchos" (dead animal laden tapas) in bars over the Christmas period?

I bumped into them this evening and talk soon turned to their vegetarianism.  Half expecting them to say that they had given it up for Lent, I was surprised and encouraged by their resilience.  In the face of much resistance, they had managed to continue living the vegetarian dream regardless of what society dictated.

Nevertheless, Diego's tale was quite telling.

While we may associate the Basques with ETA terrorist attacks, here in Spain they are equally renowned for their culinary prowess and exquisite food.   Therefore, Diego's announcement was to overshadow his entire family's enjoyment of the festive season.  As they sat down to a huge Basque surf 'n' turf style Christmas banquet, he was given a plate of cold boiled spinach and told to get on with it.  Next stop, Coventry.

Later, the family who hadn't batted an eyelid when he came out as gay tried reasoning with him.  His grandmother said it was just a phase.  They berated the boyfriend.  His uncle Ramón, asked him if he knew that he was in a select club with other vegetarians: Pol Pot, Adolf Hitler and Genghis Khan.  The family talked about meat dishes all the time. His mother fried more crispy bacon than he'd ever remembered.

However, it was his straight friends who let him down the most.  These were the friends who'd cried for joy when gay marriages were legalised, had to be pulled out of gay bars screaming during Pride and who'd gone to the Kylie Minogue concert with him.

There was only one thing that they wouldn't abide.  Vegetarianism.  A strange concept for the Spanish.  Something alien.  A bit retrograde.   And no Spanish government is going to legislate to can change that.  Homos are fine, its just VEGETARIAN homos that might be the problem.

Does anyone dare to organise the first Veg Pride?

Laura. When I lived with my lovely flatmate Neil in Dublin in the late 90s, it was a bonus that he was an amazing cook. But, he was vegetarian. I used to get home from work late at night and invariably made a bacon sanger before going to bed. This is what broke his resolve. One night, I came home and found a roast chicken in the kitchen. The next day he confessed the bacon had broken his resolve. But in Ireland, at least there was always the "pasta bake". Here in Spain, even green beans come with a little piece of chorizo or ham.... Vegetarian Hell!

I become a vegetarian when I was seven, I'm now twenty and still a strict vegetarian. Got bullied in primary and secondary school over it. How ridiculos is that? I still get shit from family and friends coz of it. Its really kinda sad when ya think bout it. Long live the vegetarians.

I came to love veg when I moved to Spain because everything is seasonal and very fresh, but the scary thing is, is that it's easier to come out as gay than as a vegetarian. My friend's parents wouldn't know what to make of me, if I were one.

I sense our Chas is a big meat eater. I don't know if I could give up meat. Either kind.

I've been veggi for twenty something years, and although I've never had the pleasure of the 'fely' (LauraD) I'm quite fit....apart from the mental breakdown, osteoperosis, malnutrition and vitimin overload!

Thank you so much Euro Witch for your astute analisis of the difficult situation faced by us vegetarians here in Spain and in Pais Vasco where the "entrecot" reigns. I have to say however that there is a glaring omission in your post - namely, that you make no mention of bechemel. Besides the ubiquitous "tortilla" which can be found just about everywhere - from the most humble tasca to something akin to one of those Feran Adria establishments, there is a veritable plethora of veggi delights which make use of this creamy sauce. Take "puerros con bechamel" (leeks with bechamel sauce) or "huevos con bechamel" (boiled eggs with bechamel) for example. The latter is particular favourite of my partner, in fact, and I have to say that they are just as delicious as that British cocktail party favourite "curried eggs" This should not lead us away from the fact however that these dishes are seen as a side dish here and not a wholesome meal in themselves. Suggesting that would undoubtedly be fro....

frowned upon and could lead to attempts to plant ham slices under the sauce or further questions being asked to establish whether you really are "one of them" In the context of the family, the situation is far more intense of course, and declaring oneself a vegetarian could lead to ostracism or even disownership. I sincerely hope that now that the issue is out in the open, we can start to assert our rights as gay vegetarians and possibly participate in Orgullo 2010 alongside silver bears, daddy bears, wolves, foxes and lambs - dressed up as one big basket of nature´s veg.
