The Straights just don't get us!
I work in a crap shop. I shan’t name it for legal reasons but let’s just say it’s “SUPER” and that I think Fergal Quinn is a twat, I think I’ve said too much...oh fudge, anyways I asked my manager for a day off next Sunday for the beloved AMI’s( Alternative Miss Ireland in case you have lived under a rock for a while). Her response was what for? I explained to her that me and a thousand other gays were going to be crammed into the Olympia, with drink, cameras and a whole heap of drag queens.
Her face was a blank. But what’s the appeal she said. Why? Eh.... cause I’m gay, this is what we do and this is like gay Christmas. She still didn’t get it and then I thought, does anyone straight get the gay lifestyle?
Do they understand that me as a lesbian cannot change a tyre, put a shelf up or that I would not be caught dead in Dock Martins if my life depended on it??? Do they understand that my gay best friend Michael, hates pink, isn’t a fan of rugby for guys in the tight white shorts and he can’t do my hair very well?
We’re not all stereotypes! I think it’s time for gay education, gayucation! We need to take the ignorant, the posers and the hags and educate the bejesus out of them. Then maybe we shall be taken serious, or if not, they shall understand the importance of the Ami’s, as much needed social event on the gay calendar.
Do you think the government would sponsor such an educational programme? Yeah thought not!
