Fling Out

A new ariel dance solo from Cork-based lesbian coreographer and performer, Tara Brandel explores life on the edge of disablility.

Fling, directed by disabled choreographer Caroline Bowditch for the Crio Glan dance company, will be part of a show called The Best of The Firkin Crane on June 26.

"I invited Caroline to bring her unique perspective as a disabled dance artist," says Brandel. "We talked about how the aesthetic of a disabled choreographer may be different to a non-disabled choreographer's, because their experience of their own physicality is so different.

"Caroline's own movement is so small, detailed, and precise, that she brought this sensibility to her direction of my solo. Like a film director, she focused on the small details. Because her movement range is vastly different to mine she would ask me to do unusual things - not knowing if they were physically possible for my body. In this way she challanged me to go to new places with my dance."

Fling invokes the sense of teetering on the edge, a feeling of not being able to let go and walk away.

Fling at The Best of the Firkin Crane, Shandon, Co Cork, Saturday, June 26, 8pm. €12, bookings 021 4507487, www.croiglan.com
