INTERVIEWING CYNDI

I jumped at the chance of interviewing Cyndi Lauper for the current issue of GCN, but a few minutes after saying yes, I began to have doubts.

Cyndi was the stuff of my gay childhood. The music video was new, beamed all the way to dull, rain-sodden Sligo every Sunday afternoon on an RTE programmed called MTUSA, and Cyndi’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ was the star video of the show – you could be guaranteed to see her giving her sad, conservative parents hell, in dayglo colours, hell week in, week out.

That video informed the onset of my adolescence. Cyndi had the right idea, girls did indeed want to have fun, and I was just one of the girls. In fact I wanted to be Cyndi. So, no wonder I jumped at the chance to interview her.

But then I couldn’t help thinking, am I just bringing her to the GCN readershiop because she was a gay icon from my childhood, or am I doing it because she’s relevant now? Once an icon, always an icon? Or is there a statute of limitations on inconography?

I'm not sure what the answer to this is. I'll only say that, because I was a huge Grease fan when I was still knee-high to a grasshopper, I've only just jumped at a chance to interview Olivia Newton John.

The Wizard

I don't care what anyone thinks - Cyndi Lauper is a major gay icon and I'm dyin to read GCN's interview with her. Great cover by the way!

Greg

Never quite got Cyndi Lauper. She's too 80s and that mad image doesn't ring true. Madonna, now there's a gay icon. Cyndi could never reach that kind of status.

Chastity Pro Bono

Cyndi is an ironic novelty; a day-glo relic of a tasteless, bygone era. She's perfect for GCN!

The Wizard

Now, now, Chastity - that's called biting the hand that feeds, isn't it?

Chastity Pro Bono

Chas says: Chas loves GCN long-time Ed! And like most of GCN readership she loves hideously camp, slightly aged pop stars. Hence the perfect synergy of Cyndi meets GCN-i!

Think the GCN cover looks great, although when it does feature a woman, it would be fab if it was a lesbian woman.

Queer Duck

The cover looks good, I'll give you that. But what the fuck? Why is Cyndi Lauper on the cover of our only gay magazine? She means nothing to me, or to anyone I know on the scene. It's a waste of good space.

Our original choice for the cover, and the one we chased, was Fiona Shaw. For a while there it looked like it was a goer, but then we got the standard "she's too busy" to take 20 minutes of her time to speak to us. Having said that, we're loving the Cyndi cover in GCN Towers. And she is a bit of an anti-homophobia heroine. Roll on Olivia Neutron Bomb!

Fiona who?

There's way more to Cyndi than "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". Hit YouTube and search for "Fearless" and the fab acoustice reworking of "Change Of Heart" and, of course, "Hymn To Love".

My favourite Cyndi song is 'Stone'. It proves that she is a classic songwriter and not just a girl who just wants to have fun.
