FA’s Homophobia Video Premiere Cancelled
The Football Association has cancelled the premiere of it’s short video to tackle homophobia in sports.
The premiere was due to take place on Thursday the 11th of February, with an special event organised by the FA and football’s anti-homophobia group, Kick It Out, at Wembley Stadium.
But the video premiere was cancelled on the 4th of this month by the chiefs of the FA, saying that they needed more time to work on the project.
The only football player to ever come out was Justin Fashanu, who was subjected to bullying and later committed suicide in 1998.
Peter Tatchell of the LGBT rights group OutRage! has said the cancelling of the premiere “has thrown the Football Association’s commitment to tackling homophobia into disarray”.
In the film that main character abuses a newspaper seller, a tube passenger and an office worker with anti-gay taunts. It finishes with him yelling similar abuse at a football match. The tag line is that since homophobia is not acceptable in the work place, it is not acceptable on the terraces either.
A new date for the premiere is yet to be set.
