Catholic Priest Punished For Performing Transgender Wedding
Father Alessandro Santoro was given time off to ‘reflect’ after completing the ceremony.
The marriage was that of Fortunato Talotta, a biological male of 58 and Sandra Alvino a woman of 64 who transitioned around 30 years ago.
Despite strong criticism from the Catholic Church, the forty four year old Italian priest went through with the wedding.
The Archbishop of Florence Giuseppe Betori described the wedding as being: "devoid of value because of the absence of the necessary components of a religious marriage"
However, father Santoro stands by his decision, explaining that it was not a rebellious act, rather, “an act of loyalty to my congregation, to the church and to the people that I love…It was my duty”.
