Dublin Devils Pitch In
Ireland's only gay football team return from international tournament defeated but satisfied.
From Sunday, June 14, to Sunday, June 21, LGBT and LGB-friendly footballers from around the globe battled for a chance to win the 2009 International Gay and Lesbian Football Association Championship (IGLFA).
IGLFA spokesman Michael Pranikoff told CNN that because of the recession and the upcoming Outgames in Copenhagen, participation in this year’s tournament was too expensive for some teams.
"This year we didn't have as big a global turnout as we hoped for. There have been a lot of challenges, so we're pleased to have 26 teams here," Pranikoff told CNN.
The Dublin Devils, Ireland’s gay football team, took part in the tournament for the third year in a row. The team, formed in April 2005, joined Minnesota’s St. Paul Crush and lost to the Sydney Rangers in the quarter finals.
The 2009 IGLF gold medal went to reigning champions and expected winner London's Stonewall. Although the Dublin Devils didn’t go far in the games, according to its website, the team has noticed huge improvements since its formation four years ago.
The site adds that while the Dublin Devils Football Club is mainly about having fun, they give 100 percent in competitions. Currently, they participate in the Astro Winter league, and the Devils hope to participate in the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne.
