Survey: Actors Still Worry About Coming Out
A study conducted by UK acting organisation Equity has revealed that almost half of gay actors surveyed are not ‘out’ to their agents, for fear their careers may be harmed.
Only 57 percent said that they are openly gay with their agents, with 35 percent of the actors surveyed saying they have experienced homophobia in their professional lives.
"I have never felt that being gay has worked against me but the finding in Equity's own survey that just under half of all gay performers are not out to their agent in the U.K. is worrying," Reuters reports Malcolm Sinclair, actor and president of Equity, said in a statement.
"But then work is scarce and, whether sexuality is a barrier or not, people may just err on the side of caution. They don't want to test the water to see if it's all right."
