An American in Dublin

Hey everyone! I'm Steven from Lawrence, Kansas in the United States. I just graduated from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!) and rather than getting a real job back home, it seemed like more fun to live abroad for a while. Maybe, I'm just putting off the inevitable for as long as possible, but I like to think I'm furthering my cultural education. So I stored all my things in my brothers tiny attic, packed a couple of very full suitcases and came to Dublin. I've only been here a little while, but I can already tell it's going to be quite an adventure! I'll be providing an insight into the gay community through the eyes of a foreigner, though I somehow doubt I'll be tap dancing down George Street à la Gene Kelly (thanks Brian for that image), but who knows- I've taken a liking to certain Irish drinks since I've been here; one too many and I might be tap dancing all over the city, if with slightly less dignity than Mr. Kelly.

Wearing Your Sunday Best

I only went to one drag show back in Kansas. There were more than that put on; I just never had the opportunity or desire to drive to them or the time to go to closer ones. The one that I did attend, I went to with a large group of musical theatre friends. The queen on stage attempted to sing “Little Shop of Horrors,” decked out with sequined plants on her dress. Needless to say, lip-syncing Little Shop as poorly as she did in front of several Broadway-holics left a bitter taste in my mouth for drag shows since.

Today, I was privileged to see a celebrity come into Honest to Goodness. You’ll never guess who it was: Madonna.  Just kidding--her ego wouldn’t fit inside that tiny café. It was Veda of Space ‘N Veda at the George. I haven’t gotten to see her show yet, but I’m hoping to very soon; I'm told it's quite good. Her presence got me thinking about the drag shows I have seen here though.  Not very many, but at all of the performances, the lips synced up with the lyrics, the costumes were shiny but not distracting, and the dance routines rivaled those in “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.” In my limited experience, that gets a lot of points.

My hope for the rest of my stay in sunny Dublin is to rise from amateur drag show attendee to the most feared Herald reviewer of drag shows the queens have ever seen. But realistically, I just don’t want to see anyone else destroying more classic Broadway hits.

Looking forward to more drag shows,
