Lesbian Student Sues School Over Yearbook Exclusion
Another lesbian student is suing Mississippi’s school district over a policy banning females from wearing tuxedos in yearbook portraits.
Ceara Sturgis’ dispute with the Copiah County School
District started in last year, before another lesbian student – Constance
McMillen in another Mississippi school district fought to wear a tuxedo and
bring a same-sex date to the prom.
The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) filed a federal
lawsuit on Sturgis’ behalf, claiming that the Copiah schools discriminated
against her on the basis of sex and gender stereotypes.
Her photo and name were omitted from the senior section of the yearbook.
