Ireland backs gay marriage

Just in time for Pride, there were two online polls this week – on ireland.com and rte.ie – that asked if Ireland should allow gay marriage and/or civil unions for same-sex couples. If you take the results on face value, it seems we're a terrifically liberal little European country these days. Quite significant majorities on both were in favour of gay marriage and/or civil unions. Of course, the old 'lies, damn lies and statistics' (or whatever the phrase is) rule applies and I guess we should take the result with a large grain of salt. Only a few thousand people answered, but more importantly as a measure of what the population really thinks, they were likely to be unrepresentative. Firstly, they were Irish Times readers and RTÉ online users - likely to be young liberal types. Secondly, I heard about the polls before I saw them, from people who wanted me to help them skew the answer to 'yes'. But despite that, it's still a little bit heartwarming that such things aren't overwhelmed by deniers thundering on about sodomites and the delicate sanctity of the current model of marriage. It's worth recalling that way back in 1993, polls were overwhelmingly against the decriminalisation of homosexuality, but thankfully, we elect governments that tend to ignore democratic opinion!

A poll is a poll. No matter how people are directed to it, and no matter what the demographic of the readership, stats from such poles can be used to advance equality.

Chsa says: 87% of all statistics are made up on the spot; 14% of all people know this.

I agree Danny. The fight for gay civil marriage is about creating a sense of inevitability. All these polls consistently show between 50-70% support. This kind of data is essential to convincing our conservative lead-from-the-back politicians about marriage equality.

I've yet to see a single relatively recent poll in which support for gay marriage doesn't significantly outweigh opposition. I really wish the government would stop harping on about how "divisive" a referendum on the issue would be. I'm almost fully certain that a referendum to legalise gay marriage would pass. Wouldn't that be a great honour, too - to be the first country on Earth where gay marriage was mandated fully by the people.

in my veiw many people would support gay marrige about 99% the other 1% are closed minded fools who spend way to much time in the pub or getting high ireland is very open minded these days i don't get why its not legal for gay men or women to marry god i thought the 80s were over just because you wanna marry someone of the same sex should not matter its all about love and if you know you are why should anyone stop you x
