Prop 8 Overturned

A federal appeals court has overturned California’s ban on same-sex marriages – known as Proposition 8 – upholding an earlier ruling that stated the ban was “unconstitutional”.

The panel of three judges at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found California had no compelling social or legal justification for denying gay and lesbian citizens the right to marry.

"Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gay men and lesbians in California and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples," wrote Judge Stephen Reinhardt in the decision.

Celebrities and marriage equality advocates took to Twitter yesterday to celebrate the ruling. Modern Family's (pictured left) Jesse Tyler said "Historic! #Prop8 is unconstitutional. @AFER & I won't stop until ALL Americans are #free2marry". Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane, employing his trademark wit, said "Prop 8 architects: Every civil rights battle is eventually won by the oppressed party. Save your hundred mil and buy some Bud platinum."

Prop 8 supporters are expected appeal the decision and to take the case to the Supreme Court.
