Anti-Gay Group Calls For Ellen Sacking
An American anti-gay group One Million Moms – a project of the notorious American Family Association – are demanding that US retail giants JC Penney fire Ellen DeGeneres as their spokeswoman because she is a lesbian.
In a message on its website the "family values" groups writes, "Funny that JC Penney thinks hiring an open homosexual spokesperson will help their business when most of their customers are traditional families."
"DeGeneres is not a true representation of the type of families that shop at their store. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there. The small percentage of customers they are attempting to satisfy will not offset their loss in sales."
"By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years."
However, JC Penney president Micheal Francis said in a statement, "We share the same fundamental values as Ellen. At JC Penney, we couldn't think of a better partner to help us put the fun back into the retail experience."
GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) responded to the One Million Mom campaign through a statement on their website saying, "Today, more people than ever celebrate the love of every family - gay or straight - and know that no person should be ridiculed, much less fired, simply for being who they are."
