UK Government May Deport Gay Man
The British Government has been called to intervene in a case which could see Alvin Gahimbaze deported to his home country of Burundi.
Alvin Gahimbaze was removed from his home by the British authorities and taken to a London detention centre to await deportation back to Burundi after the Border Immigration Agency turned down his application for asylum.
Homosexuality in Burundi has been criminalised, which could punish offenders with up to two years in prison.
“His life will be in serious danger if he is deported back to Burundi due to the ethnic clashes and the serious institutional homophobia,” said a spokesperson for the British Refugee Charity, Everyone Group, who have contacted the British Home Office, appealing for the release of Mr Gahimbaze and a cancellation of the deportation order.
Over 5,000 people signed a petition last year calling for an end to deportation of LGBT asylum seekers to homophobic countires.
