Tharpton High Allow Lesbian Prom Date
The Alabama school cancelled its prom to stop a lesbian student from bringing a date, but has reversed its decision.
Earlier this week, Tharptown High School cancelled their prom to ensure that one of the organisers could not bring her girlfriend.
17 year old Cynthia Stewart, was told she would be unable to bring her girlfriend to the event and was forced to remove a sticker which read “I am a lesbian”.
The case was immediately taken up by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) who demanded that the decision be reversed. This organisation pointed out that the school officials had violated Stewart's First Amendment rights by removing her sticker.
When asked about the situation, stewart said: "I can't believe my school is doing all of this just to keep me from bringing my girlfriend to the prom.
"All I want is to be able to be myself and go to my prom with the person I love, just like any other student wants to do."
However, the High School has since reversed their decision, most probably as a result of the ACLU’s actions.
Stewart has since been informed that if her date is approved she will be allowed to attend the prom.
Donald Borden, the assistant superintendent emphasised that the young girl was being vetted because she lives outside the school district and not because of her sexuality.
