Should Ireland just come home from Eurovision now?

Things are not rosy in Moscow and the thorn in the side of Channel 1, the national broadcaster organizing Eurovision is none other than our Head of Delegation Julian Vignoles.

In the press conference held after Ireland's second rehearsal, Mr Vignoles claimed to be "very disappointed" with how the staging of Ireland's entry is being dealt with.  The camera shots are all over the place and the background that Ireland wanted displayed on the LED screens behind the singers was rejected by Channel 1 and no replacement has been found.   Mr Vignoles said that there were some basic camera shot rules that needed to be observed when making a TV show and that these were being completely ignored in our entry.

When I watched some of the rehearsals earlier in the week, I was puzzled by the fact that there was absolutely no imagery behind Sinead Mulvey.  The large colourful letters that appear in their video were supposed to be on stage or at least on the large screens behind.  Now it looks like Sinead is singing from the terraces of a football stadium with rows of lights behind her.

Another embarrassment to add to the list for Channel 1.  There is already a talk of a walkout by Lithuania.   Should we just join em?

Raven, Thanks for taking the time to write a comment. I still think the attitude for us is to beat them at their own game. There are a number of reasons why they do well. 1. They send their most experienced singers. 2. They send songs that Europe can in general tap its foot along to. People at home usually prefer this than some moribund ballad. 3. For more than 50, culture was their only outlet. They

oops.. they know how to put on a good show. Ireland on the other hand is messing up for a number of reasons. The most important one is that RTE definitely doesn't want to win. There is a discommunal lack of interest in the Contest in Donnybrook. I know because the composers of Et Cetera are people I know and they were shocked at how they were just left to their own devices. No support and no interest at all from RTE. Secondly, Linda Martin spoke about how she was looking for a great song, attractive artist and interesting "show". She might have got the song right, but poor Sinead looked awful last night and there was no show. On the other hand, look at Greece and the Ukraine. Look at the UK. Their song is boring and old-fashioned but it has the support of a major record label that is doing EVERYTHING possible to get it heard. So, we need for next year: An experienced artist (like Brian Kennedy a few years back) Dare I say it a "celtic/mystical" ballad. A breathtakin....
