Powell Changes Sides on DADT

Former US secretary of state Colin Powell has said that he supports the repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

Despite previously backing the pill in 1993, he states that “Attitudes and circumstances have changed…Society is always reflected in the military. It’s where we get our soldiers from.”

Powell added; “If the chiefs and commanders are comfortable with moving to change the policy, then I support it.”

Over 13,000 service members have been fired since the introduction of the ban after they came out or were outed by third parties.

Former solider Warren Arbury knows all to well of the pain the policy has caused.  He served for seven years, until a man he had previously dated published a list of soldiers he had been in relationships with. One of these men was Arbury. He was swiftly served an honourable discharge.  He added that “I would go back at the lowest ranking, I would go back as a private,” he said. "That’s what I was born to do.”
