Obama Calls Uganda Anti-gay Bill 'Odious'
US President Barack Obama strongly criticised the proposed Ugandan law criminalising homosexuality at the National Prayer Breakfast yesterday.
The breakfast is always attended by the serving US President and receives sponsorship from religious group, The Fellowship. Many of whom are backing the Ugandan Bill.
Acknowledging the differing views of the guests in attendance he stated: "Surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are, whether it is here in the United States or… more extremely, in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda."
Liberal religious leaders in the US responded to the President's appearance at the event by hosting their own version, called the American Prayer Hour.
They claimed it was as a protest to the sponsors of The National Prayer Breakfast who are “directly tired to the draconian ‘kill the gays’ Bill in Uganda”
The Fellowship, also known as The Family, are extremely secretive, with no website, contact details or published members list. Members are thought to include politicians, business leaders and religious figures.
