Belgium Swears In Openly Gay PM

Elio Di Rupo has become Europe’s second openly gay head of government after being sworn in as the Belgium Prime Minister.

French-speaking Rupo, who was sworn in by King Albert II yesterday after 535 days of a ‘caretaker' government, is the first French-speaker to lead the country since 1979.

In his opening speech to parliament, the Rupo promised Belgium's Dutch speaking majority (who account for 60% of the country) that he would improve his elementary Dutch in an attempt to unify the county.

"I will visit Flemish families, companies and associations. We will get to know each other better and it rejoices me," he said.
